SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

Under No Child Left Behind (NCLB), a Title I campus who fails to meet Adequate Yearly Progress and is in School Improvement status of Stage 2 or higher must offer free tutoring in reading, math, or science to its students who receive free or reduced lunch meals.  These tutoring programs are called supplemental educational services and are intended to provide extra academic assistance for eligible children in order to increase achievement on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).  The tutoring offered must be held outside of the regular school day by state approved providers and must be of high quality, research-based, and specifically designed to increase student academic achievement.

A parent of an eligible student may choose the tutoring company from a list of state approved providers.  As long as the student continues to be eligible for free or reduced lunch during the school year, the tutoring will be of no cost to parents up to the district's per pupil allotment.  Parents have the opportunity to work with the district and selected provider to develop a student learning plan, set goals, determine how information will be communicated to all parties and determine how progress will be measured.

The process is relatively simple to enroll a student in supplemental educational services.
  • Review provider list:  Local Providers
  • Select 3 providers

  • Return form to school campus, last day to enroll for services during the first enrollment period is October 24, 2011. A second enrollment period may begin in January 2012 for 60 days.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Will all students who sign up for the program be served?
If the number of students requesting SES exceeds the amount of money the district has available for SES, the district will give priority to the lowest-achieving student, specifically students who received low or failing scores on the Math or Reading portion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).
2. Is my student eligible to receive SES?
All students who receive free or reduced priced meals and attend a Title 1 campus in Stage 2 or higher of Needs Improvement Status are eligible.
3. How do parents/guardians register their child for the SES program?
Parents should fill out the Texas SES Request Form sent in the mail or picked up from your local school. Pick your top choice and two alternates.
4. When can parents register their child? Is there a deadline for registration?
The first enrollment period is from August 22, 2011 to October 24, 2011
5. How many sessions does my child get?
The number of sessions provided to a student will depend on the hourly rate of the tutoring provider you have chosen. Each student is granted a specific amount of money for SES
(Per Pupil Allocation-PPA) Sessions are calculated like this:
PPA / Hourly Rate = Number of Sessions
6. What hours and which days will the SES program be held?
All SES services must occur outside of the regular school day. The provider you select will work with you and the district to determine hours and days of services.
7. Can parents transfer their child to another tutoring program after they register?
While we do not encourage this, a parent may change providers if they are displeased with services. If this should occur, contact Pat Johnston at 806-766-1976.
8. Is transportation provided for my child?
Transportation is NOT provided. Parents will be responsible for the transportation.
9. Once the parents register their child, is there anything else they need to do?
If you chose to participate in the creation of the SLP, you will need to review, sign, and return to provider. If you chose not to participate, you will be sent a copy of the SLP and the tutoring provider will notify you of the tutoring schedule.
10. What is a Student Learning Plan (SLP)?
The SLP is a written plan and is based on your child’s academic needs and determines the areas of which the tutor will focus.
11. Who do I contact for additional information?
For any additional information, please contact the District SES Specialiast, Pat Johnston at 766-1976.
